Look who has exited her den and is ready to take on the world- Kit the Fox! While she may be tiny, Kit’s sense of fashion (or sensitivity to the cold) is mighty! She’s a bit sly and quick on her feet, so keep an eye out for a flash of orange as she goes running by to play outside!

Hook: 3.5 mm
Yarn: Worsted Weight: Approx. 100 yards- Orange, White, Black, Grey (I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads)
12 mm Safety Eyes, buttons or Embroidered Eyes
Polyfill

Optional: Stitch Markers and pins, embroidery thread for eyelashes, other accents such as buttons
Other Notes:
Magic Ring Alternative- If you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain.
Continuous Rounds– This pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise indicated.
Picot Stitch– To make a picot stitch, CH 3, then SL ST into the first CH.
Foundational Half Double Crochet- A foundational half double crochet removes the necessity of making a starting chain by building the chain into the base of the half double crochet stitch. To make the first stitch, CH 3, YO, and insert your hook into the 3rd CH from your hook, YO and pull through (3 loops on hook). YO, and pull through the first loop on your hook (this creates the ‘chain stitch’). YO, and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. To make all subsequent stitches, YO and insert your hook into the chain stitch you made in the previous stitch, YO and pull through (3 loops on hook). YO, and pull through the first loop on your hook (this creates the ‘chain stitch’). YO, and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
Colour Change– When changing from one colour to another, in your final SC stitch after you have 2 loops on your hook, pull through with your new colour. In the next stitch of the next row, substitute a SL ST for the first SC as it creates a more seamless colour change that is not as obvious.

Pattern:
Muzzle:
In white colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
3-4: SC around (12 st)
SL ST to first stitch of previous row. Leave long tail for sewing on later
With black yarn and a needle, sew through the very middle of your muzzle from back to front, and sew back through about 2 rows up to start forming the nose. Repeat to fill in a nose that is about 4 stitches wide, or to your desired thickness. Next, run your needle and yarn from one side of the top of the black nose to the other twice, to give the top of your nose a clean edge. Weave in the end of the black yarn only. Set aside your muzzle for later.
Head:
In orange colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)
R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)
R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)
R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)
7-11 SC around (36 st)
Switch to white yarn
12: SC around (36 st)
13: 4 SC, INV DEC (30 st)
14: 3 SC, INV DEC (24 st)
15: 2 SC, INV DEC (18 st)
16: SC, INV DEC (12 st)
FO, and weave in the ends.
Lightly stuff the head.
Stuff the muzzle and pin to the head, between rows 10 and 15. Sew in place and weave in ends.
Place safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11, on either side of the muzzle, about 7-8 stitches apart. If you would like the add eyelashes, remove the safety eyes and sew on eyelashes using embroidery thread. Place the safety eyes back in place and fasten washers to the back. Add any other facial features such as eyebrows at this point before moving on.
Continue to stuff the head until it reaches the desired firmness.
Ears: (make 2)
Outer Ear:
In orange colour yarn:
R1: 4 SC into MR (4 st)
R2: (SC, INC SC) x2 (6 st)
R3: (2 SC, INC SC) x 2 (8 st)
R4: (3 SC, INC SC) x2 (10 st)
R5: (4 SC, INC SC) x2 (12 st)
R6: (5 SC, INC SC) x 2 (14 st)
R7-8: SC around (14 st)
FO, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing later. Flatten the ear so the tail of yarn is in one corner.
Inner Ear:
In white colour yarn:
R1: in a MR- SC, 3 HDC, DC, P, DC, 3 HDC, SC (11 st)
SL ST to 1st SC and FO.
Pin the inner ear to the outer ear piece, with the tip of the picot at least 2 rows down from the top. Sew in place, working in and out of the outer stitches.
To add black tips to the ears, take a piece of black yarn and with a needle, sew from the back to the front of the bottom of the first row, up and around the first row, and pull your needle through again from back to front. Repeat as many times as you wish to cover the tops of the ears.
Now, pin your ears in place, starting approximately 2-3 rows down from the top of the head, or in a position of your liking. You can give the ears a bit of a curve at the base, or pin them straight. Sew the ears in place and weave in the ends.
Tummy:
In orange colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)
R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)
R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)
6-12 SC around (30 st)
13: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)
14: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)
15: (4 SC, INV DEC) x3 (15 st)
16-17: SC around (15 st)
SL ST to first stitch of previous row and FO, leaving a tail of yarn. Stuff firmly. Pin the body to the base of the head, sewing in place. FO and weave in the ends.
Arms: (make 2)
In black colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3-4: SC around (12 st)
R5: (SC, INV DEC) x 4 (8 st)
Switch to orange colour yarn
R6-11: SC around (8 st)
Stuff the bottom half of the arms, more firmly at the base and loosely further up.
To close, pinch the sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. FO, leaving a length of yarn. Pin to the sides of body about 3 rows down from where the head and body join and sew in place. Weave in the ends.
Legs: (make 2)
In black colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (3 SC, INC SC) x3 (15 st)
R4-5: SC around (15 st)
R6: (SC, INV DEC) x5 (10 st)
Switch to orange colour yarn
R7: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)
R8-14: SC around (8 st)
Stuff the bottom half of the legs, more firmly at the base and loosely further up.
To close, pinch the sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. FO, leaving a length of yarn. Pin to the base of the body, and sew in place. Weave in the ends.
Tail:
In white colour yarn:
R1: 4 SC into MR (4 st)
R2: (SC, INC SC) x2 (6 st)
R3: (2 SC, INC SC) x 2 (8 st)
R4: SC around (8 st)
Switch to orange colour yarn
R5: (SC, INC SC) x4 (12 st)
R6: (2 SC, INC SC) x 4 (16 st)
R7-9: SC around (16 st)
R10: (6 SC, INV DEC) x 2 (14 st)
R11: (5 SC, INV DEC) x 2 (12 st)
R12: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)
Lightly stuff the tail, or to the desired firmness (the tail in the photo was only lightly stuffed so it retained a flat shape)
R13: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)
R14-16: SC around (8 st)
Add any additional stuffing as you see fit.
To close the tail., pinch the sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. FO, leaving a length of yarn. Pin to the back of the body, approximately 5-6 rows up from the base and sew in place. Weave in the ends.
You now have a completed little fox! However, if your fox is feeling fancy, or just a little chilly from the cold, continue below to make a headband and/or scarf!
Scarf:
When starting the beginning chain, make sure to leave a couple of inches of yarn for sewing the bottom of the scarf closed. Please see ‘Other Notes’ for how to complete a FHDC. The CH 3 when you start your FHDC does NOT count as a stitch)
In grey colour yarn:
R1: 45 FHDC (45 st)
Check to make sure the scarf can wrap around the head of the fox twice and still slip over the head. Add or take away stitches to make the scarf your desired length.
SL ST to the first FHDC of the row and FO. Sew along the first and last FHDC using the tail ends to connect it together. Weave in the ends.
Headband:
When starting the beginning chain, make sure to leave a couple of inches of yarn for sewing the bottom of the headband closed. Please see ‘Other Notes’ for how to complete a FHDC. The CH 3 when you start your FHDC does NOT count as a stitch)
In grey colour yarn:
R1: 28 FHDC, SL ST to first FHDC to join (28 st)
R2: CH 2. IN BLO, 28 HDC, SL ST to first HDC to join (28 st)
FO and use the starting tail to sew the bottom of your headband together. Weave in ends
Bow
In grey colour yarn:
R1: 14 FHDC, SL ST to first FHDC to join (14 st)
R2: CH 2. 14 HDC, SL ST to first HDC to join (14 st)
FO, leaving a long tail for completing the headband. Use the starting tail to sew the bottom of the bow together. Fold the bow in half, with where you joined each row in the centre. Place on top of your headband, in line with where your joined each row. Take your long yarn tail and wrap it tightly around both the bow and headband several times. Then, with a needle, secure the wrapped yarn in place by sewing back and forth through it on the backside of the headband. Weave in the ends.
