As I’ve shared on my blog at various points, I am trying to become a better knitter. While crochet is synonymous to me with amigurumi, the knitting world feels like a better fit for me when it comes to wearables.
I love the texture that can be made by knitting and purling, and actively have been seeking out opportunities to make wearables that feature such gorgeous textures. A designer that utilizes a wide variety of textures in her work is Modesty By Laura.
Several months back when she shared a new shawl that she would be needing testers for in the coming weeks, I KNEW I had to apply! This shawl soon to be named the Emerald Shawl is the most complex knit pattern I have completed thus far, and also one of my absolute favourites. The pattern is also available now!

For this pattern, I used my faithful Clover Takumi Knitting Needle Combo Set. Circular knitting needles come in handy for this pattern, as it is worked length-wise. I also opted to use Lion Brand’s Heartland Yarn in Cuyahoga Valley. This pattern uses a bit less than two skeins of this beautiful yarn, but the texture would look lovely in so many different yarns and colour choices!
I also made use of lots of stitch markers! Considering myself to still be a baby knitter, I am fully aware that I sometimes make mistakes (mainly skipping yarn overs!) so I opted to mark between each repeat in the pattern so if I got to the end of the repeat and I had stitches left, I only had to tink a small bit! Stitch markers are also recommended for when you get to the german short row section of the pattern.

Onto the Pattern!
The pattern itself for the Emerald Shawl is beautifully thought out and designed, and written to follow along with ease. The bottom is separated into 9 leaf motif blocks, utilizing a variety of gorgeous stitch techniques.
After that, the top half utilizes german short rows to create a gorgeous shape to the shawl, causing it to sit beautifully over the shoulders.
To me this is almost two projects in one. The first half (the motifs) calls for different stitch combinations for each row, keeping my mind engaged. The second half with it’s repetitive nature is perfect to work on while binge watching tv or listening to a podcast. Really the best of both worlds!
The shawl is also easily altered to be shorter or longer in length, depending on your personal preferences.
Calling for a worsted weight yarn, this shawl is perfect to wear on a spring day, or on a cool summer evening to keep your shoulders warm. It also works well as a toasty scarf in the winter!
