Boo Bunny

What a boo-tiful day to trick-or-treat! This little ghost bunny may look scary on the outside, but don’t worry, he’s just playing make believe! Just make sure to pop a candy (or carrot) into his bag, and he’s totally sweet.

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

U.S. Terminology

Size: 6.5 inches seated from the top of the ears down

Materials

  • Hook: 3.5 mm, 4.5 mm
  • Yarn: Worsted  Weight: Approx. 100 yards- fur colour of your choice, black, orange, and a small amount of yarn for the nose (I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads), DK/Sport Weight: Approx 70 yards- white (I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops and Threads)
  • 10 mm Safety Eyes, Buttons or Embroidered Eyes
  • Poly fil
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: stitch markers, pins, embroidery thread or white and black felt (and thread for sewing on the felt)

Other Notes:

Magic Ring Alternative- if you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain.

Continuous Rounds– all components are worked continuously unless otherwise indicated.

Invisible Decrease– An invisible decrease is a great alternative to SC2TOG for amigurumi as it is less likely to leave holes that the stuffing can show through. If you don’t feel comfortable doing an invisible decrease, feel free to SC2TOG instead. To do an invisible decrease, take your hook and stick it through the FRONT LOOPS of the next 2 stitches, YO and pull through those same front loops. YO and pull through remaining loops. For row 14 of the body, it says to do SC2TOG instead of INV DEC because an INV DEC only utilizes the front loops, whereas this row needs to be worked in the BLO.

Felt/Embroidery Accents– If you decide to add the BOO and jack-o’-lantern to your bunny and bag, there are a few options. I used felt in white and black, cut out the shapes I wanted and sewed them on using thread. You could also do the same with fabric glue. Alternatively, you could use embroidery thread to form the letters and face!

Hook Size- All components except for the ghost costume use worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. For the ghost costume only, use dk/sport weight yarn and a 4.5 mm hook.

Colour Change– When changing from one colour to another, in your final SC stitch after you have 2 loops on your hook, pull through with your new colour.

Pattern:

Head:

With a 3.5 mm hook, in fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)

R7-R13: SC around (36 st)

R14: (4 SC, INV DEC) x6 (30 st)

Place 10 mm eyes between R10 &11, 5 st apart and add washers to the back.

Using a colour of your choice, stitch a nose, running the needle through several times horizontally, in line with the eyes, and one time vertically, 2 rows down.

R15: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)

Start stuffing, making sure to stuff firmly (be aware though that overstuffing can cause the stuffing to show through the stitches).

R16: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)

R17: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)

FO, and finish stuffing. Weave in ends.

Ears:

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 5 SC into MR (5 st)

R2: INC SC around (10 st)

R3: (4 SC, INC SC) x2 (12 st)

R4-R6: SC around (12 st)

R7: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)

R8-R11: SC around (10 st)

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Flatten ears and pinch base in half, sewing back and forth a few times. Set aside for later.

Body:

For Row 14, instead of INV DEC it says SC2TOG. This is because by definition you cannot create an invisible decrease working in the BLO.

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

Switch to black colour yarn:

R6: SC around (30 st)

R7: In BLO, SC around (30 st)

R8-10: SC around (30 st)

R11: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)

R12: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)

Start stuffing, and stuff subsequent rounds.

R13: SC around (18 st)

R 14: SC, SC2TOG x6 (12 st)

R15: SC around (12 st)

FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Turn your bunny’s body so the bottom faces away from you. Reattach black yarn to the unworked front loops of R7 and HDC in each stitch around (30 st). SL ST to the first stitch and FO. Sew the body to the head and weave in the ends.

Arms: (make 2)

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 5 SC in MR (5 st)

R2: INC SC (10 st)

R3: SC around (10 st)

Switch to black yarn

R4: SC around (10 st)

R5: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)

Stuff tip of hand lightly

R6- R9: SC around (8 st)

To close, pinch sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. FO, leaving length of yarn. Set aside for now.

Legs: (make 2)

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC in MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC (12 st)

R3-5: SC around (12 st)

R6: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)

Stuff at base of foot, and continue to lightly stuff up to halfway up the leg

R7: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)

R8-R11: SC around (8 st)

To close, pinch sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. Finish off, leaving length of yarn.

Pin the legs to the base of the body and sew on. Weave in the ends.

Tail:

In fur colour:

R1: 4 SC in MR (4 st)

R2: INC SC x4 (8 st)

R3: (3 SC, INC SC) x2 (10 st)

R4: SC around (10 st)

SL ST to first stitch of previous round and FO. Lightly stuff if necessary and pin to the body in a position that will help the bunny sit up (around 2-3 rounds up from the base of the body).

Ghost Costume:

Remember to use DK/sport weight for this portion. Don’t crochet too tightly, otherwise the costume will be stiff instead of flowy! Check as you work on the costume to make sure it fits properly

With a 4.5 mm hook, in white colour:

R1: 6 SC in MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC (12 st)

R3. CH 6, skip 2 st, 4 SC, CH 6, skip 2 st, 4 SC (8 SC, 12 CH)

R4. 8 SC around CH, (SC, INC) x2, 8 SC around CH, (SC, INC) x2 (28 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x7 (35 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x7 (42 st)

R7-10: SC around (42 st)

R12:10 SC, INV DEC, 5 SC around CH, INV 3 DEC, 5 SC across CH, INV DEC, 19 SC (42 st)

R13-18: SC around (42)

R19: 5 SC, CH 5, skip 4 st, INV DEC, 15 SC, INV DEC, CH 5, Skip 4, 10 SC (32 SC, 10 CH)

R20: 3 SC, INV DEC, 5 SC around CH, 17 SC, 5 SC around CH, INV DEC, 8 SC (40 st)

R21-26: SC around (40 st) if you wish the costume to be longer, add additional rows

R27: (sk 1, 2 HDC 3 INC, sk 1, SC) x 8 (56 st)

FO and weave in the ends. Now, place the costume on your bunny and pin the ears and arms through the appropriate holes, so they fit properly. Make sure the eyes can be seen through the eye holes! Remove the ghost costume and sew the arms and ears in place. Weave in the ends.

Trick or Treat Bag:

Switch back to 3.5 mm hook. The first round is worked all the way around the chain.

In orange colour:

R1: CH8, SC in second st from hook and subsequent 5 st across. INC SC in final st. Turn so you are working on the other side of the ch and 6 SC (14 st)

R2-7: SC around (14 st)

To make the bag longer or shorter, just add or take away rounds.

Continue to SC until you reach one corner of the bag. This is the new end of the previous round.

R8: SC, SL ST, CH 10, sk 2, SL ST, SC3, SL ST, CH 10, sk 2, SL ST, SC, SL ST (10 st)

FO and weave in ends.

You can now add a pumpkin face or other decoration (a Halloween button would be cute!) to the bag. The bag shown uses cut black felt sewn in place with thread, but you could also use embroidery thread to make a face.
