Ornament Bunny Stitches

Materials

Hook: 3.25 or 3.5 mm (see Other Notes) *

Yarn: Worsted Weight: Approx. 100 yards- Fur Colour, White, Ornament Colour (I used Caron Simply Soft Party as it is sparkly)

10 mm Safety Eyes or Embroidered Eyes

Polyfill

Needle

Optional: Stitch Markers and pins, embroidery thread for eyelashes, ribbon for hanging and for a bow around the neck

Other Notes: Please read before beginning

Magic Ring alternative- if you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain

*Hook Sizing and BLO– As the ornament is worked in the BLO, there is more potential for the stuffing showing through. Even though different yarns may all be labelled as worsted weight, some are in fact thinner than others. If you are using a thinner worsted weight you may want to use a smaller hook (he blue bunny on the cover was made using a 3.5 hook using Impeccable by Loops and Threads, and the red bunny was made using a 3.25 mm hook with Carons Simply Soft: Party). An alternative is also to only work in the BLO only for rows 9-14 and work in both rows for 1-8 and 15-19 if you find working with a small hook to be a challenge. This will keep the shape but will change the texture of the top and bottom.

Rows– The ornament tummy of the bunny is worked in rows, in the BLO. To connect the first and last stitch, you must slip stitch them together, followed by chaining 1. The slip stitch and chain should be done as tight as possible.

Continuous Rounds– all components other than the ornament are worked continuously

Colour Change– When the next stitch calls for a new colour, in the previous stitch switch to the new colour when doing the last yarn over and pull through. As this pattern has many colour changes, carry your different colours of yarn behind your work to easily switch back and forth.

Pattern:

Ornament:

This section is worked in ROWS. The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch!

In ornament colour yarn in the BLO:

R1: 6 SC into MR, SL ST to first SC (6 st)

R2: CH 1, INC SC, SL ST to first SC (12 st)

R3: CH 1, (SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (18 st)

R4: CH 1, (2 SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (24 st)

R5: CH 1, (3 SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (30 st)

R6: CH 1, (4 SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (36 st)

R7: CH 1, (5 SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (42 st)

R8: CH 1, (6 SC, INC SC) x6, SL ST to first SC (48 st)

R9-13 are 48 st around and worked in BLO SC. The row is connected with a SL ST and started with a CH 1. Remember when changing colours you must switch to your new colour in the previous stitch in the final yarn over and pull through.

Graph Instructions

R9-13: CH 1, SC in BLO around, SL ST to first SC (48 st)

Follow below, starting each row from right to left. The white squares indicate the background colour, and the red squares indicate your snowflake colour. (Lefties, as you work in the opposite direction as righties when you crochet, you can choose to start in the bottom left if you wish, it doesn’t really matter as this pattern will look the same regardless!)

In the BLO:

R14: CH 1, (6 SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (42 st)

R15: CH 1, (5 SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (36 st)

R16: CH 1, (4 SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (30 st)

R17: CH 1, (3 SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (24 st)

R18: CH 1, (2 SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (18 st)

Start stuffing your ornament at this point. Stuff firmly, but make sure that the polyfill cannot be seen through your stitches.

R19: CH 1, (SC, SC2TOG) x 6, SL ST to first SC (12 st)

FO and weave in ends. Finish stuffing the ornament.

Head:

All components from this point forward are worked in CONTINUOUS ROUNDS.

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)

R7-R13: SC around (36 st)

R14: (4 SC, INV DEC) x6 (30 st)

If you would like to make your bunny into a hanging ornament, you should attach your ribbon or yarn through the top of the head at this point. There are a few different ways to do this, depending on how thick the type of string you choose to use.

You can:

-Stick your crochet hook through the top of the bunny and pull a loop of yarn or ribbon through. Tie a knot underneath

-Use a needle and pull both ends (or one end at a time if you are still finding it difficult) of your yarn or ribbon through the top of the bunny down into its head. Tie a knot underneath

Place 10 mm eyes between R10 &11, 5 st apart. If you wish to sew on eyelashes, do not add washers to the back of the safety eyes yet! Remove the eyes once you like their placement, using embroidery thread, sew on two or three eyelashes for each eye, starting where the safety eyes will go and out on an angle. Make sure they are long enough otherwise they will be hidden by the eyes.

Reinsert the eyes and add washers to the back.

Using a colour of your choice, stitch a nose, running the needle through several times horizontally, in line with the eyes, and one time vertically, 2 rows down.

R15: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)

Start stuffing, making sure to stuff VERY firmly

R16: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)

R17: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)

FO, and finish stuffing. Leave a long piece of yarn for sewing onto your ornament. Sew your head and ornament together, matching the SC stitches from the head with the ornament.

Ears:

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 5 SC into MR (5 st)

R2: INC SC around (10 st)

R3: (4 SC, INC SC) x2 (12 st)

R4-R6: SC around (12 st)

R7: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)

R8-R11: SC around (10 st)

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Flatten ears and pinch base in half, sewing back and forth a few times. Pin ears to top of head, starting 2-3 rows from the top, sewing in place. Weave in ends.

Arms: (make 2)

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 4 SC into MR (4 st)

R2: INC SC around (8 st)

R3-5: SC around (8 st)

If you would like longer arms, feel free to add additional rows

SL St to the first SC of previous row and FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff arms lightly. Pin your arms to the body in a position and height that you like. I placed mine facing slightly forwards, between rows 12 and 14, approximately 14 stitches apart. Sew to ornament and weave in ends

Legs: (make 2)

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (2 SC, INC SC) x 4 (16 st)

R4: SC around (16 st)

R5: 6 SC, 2 INV DEC, 6 SC (14 st)

R6: 6 SC, INV DEC, 6 SC (13 st)

R7: (2 SC, INV DEC) x3, SC (10 st)

SL ST to the first SC of the previous row and FO. Lightly stuff legs. The decreases in rounds 5 and 6 will make a slight curve in your legs. When attaching to the ornament, make sure to place them so the base points slightly upwards. Pin the legs to the front of the ornament, or in a position that you like. I placed mine between rows 5 and 8, approximately 5 rows apart. Sew to the ornament and weave in ends.

Tail:

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 4 SC into MR (4 st)

R2: INC SC around (8 st)

R 3-4: SC around (8 st)

SL St to the first SC of previous round and FO. Lightly stuff if necessary. Pin to the back of your ornament body, in a location that will help it stay balanced and able to sit up. I placed mine between rows 4 and 6. Sew to the ornament and weave in ends.

Embellishments:

Add any additional embellishments to complete your bunny, such as by tying some ribbon around her neck. If you are concerned about the ribbon coming undone, you might use some clear thread and run it back and forth through the ribbon knot a few times so that it is secured.
