From the literary classic comes the Frankenbunny. Sewn together from the pieces of many departed bunny souls, this Frankenbunny has come back to life through a triumph of science and crocheting! We aren’t totally sure how he managed to gain consciousness, considering his bolts aren’t made of metal…

Materials
Hook: 3.5 mm
Yarn: Worsted Weight: Approx. 100 yards- Green, Black, Purple, small amount of Grey (I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads)
10 mm Safety Eyes or Embroidered Eyes
Polyfill
Needle
Optional: Stitch Markers and pins, embroidery thread for stitches, button(s)
Other Notes:
Magic Ring alternative- if you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain
Continuous Rounds– each row is completed in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated
Colour Change– When changing from one colour to another, in your final SC stitch after you have 2 loops on your hook, pull through with your new colour. In the next stitch of the next row, a SL ST is worked as it creates a more seamless colour change that is not as obvious.
Pattern:
Head:
In green colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)
R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)
R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)
R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)
R7-R15: SC around (36 st)
R16: (4 SC, INV DEC) x6 (30 st)
Place 10 mm eyes between R12 &13, 5 st apart.
Using grey yarn and a needle, stitch a nose, running the needle through several times horizontally, in line with the eyes, and one time vertically, 2 rows down.
R17: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)
Start stuffing, making sure to stuff VERY firmly
R18: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)
R19: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)
FO, weaving in ends. Finish stuffing.
Add facial stitches at this point, making sure they don’t go above 3 rows above the safety eyes, otherwise they may be hidden by the hair.
Hair:
In black colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)
R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)
R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)
R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)
R7: In BLO, SC around (36 st)
R8: SC around (36 st)
The following row will work back and forth to form the front bangs, and subsequent rows will make the back of the hair
R9: 4 SC, CH 1, turn. 2 SC2TOG. CH 1, turn. SC2TOG, SL ST down side of bang. (SL ST in next stitch. 4 SC, CH 1, turn. 2 SC2TOG, CH 1, turn. SC2TOG, SL ST down side of bang) x 2.
R10: 22 SC (22 st)
R11: CH 1, turn. SC2TOG, 18 SC, SC2TOG (20 st)
R12: CH 1, turn. SC across (20 st)
FO, leaving long tail for sewing to head. Pin onto hair with bangs above front of the face. Sew in and out around the hairline, weaving in ends.
Bolts: (make 2)
In grey colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: 6 SC in BLO (6 st)
FO, leaving tail for sewing. Pin the bolts on each side of the head, 1-2 rows below where the eyes were placed.
Ears: (make 2)
Using green colour yarn:
R1: 5 MR (5 st)
R2: INC SC around (10 st)
R3: (4 SC, INC SC) x2 (12 st)
R4-R6: SC around (12 st)
R7: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)
R8-R11: SC around (10 st)
FO, leaving long tail for sewing. Do not stuff. If you would like to add stitching to one of both ears, add them at this point. Flatten ears and pinch base in half, sewing back and forth a few times. Pin ears to top of head, around round 3 of the hair. Sew the ears in place, making sure to run the yarn through both the hair and head so they are stable. Weave in ends.
Body:
In black colour yarn:
R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC around (12 st)
R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)
R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)
R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6, switching to green yarn in final stitch (30 st)
R6-10: (30 st)
R11: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)
R12: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18st)
Start stuffing, making sure to stuff firmly as you finish subsequent rounds
R13: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)
R 14: SC around (12 st)
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing to the head. Line head up with body and sew together. Weave in ends.
Legs: (make 2)
In green colour:
R1: 6 SC in MR (6 st)
R2: INC SC (12 st)
R3: SC around, switching to black yarn in final stitch (12 st)
R4: SL ST, 11 SC (12 st)
R5: SC around (12 st)
R6: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)
Stuff at base of foot, and continue to lightly stuff up to halfway up the leg
R7: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)
R8-R11: SC around (8 st)
To close, pinch sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. Finish off, leaving length of yarn.
Pin the legs to the bottom of the body, and sew on. Weave in ends.
Coat:
For the coat, leave a long tail before chaining, (unless you wish to leave your coat open). You will use this tail to sew your coat closed later.
In purple colour yarn:
R1: CH 33, SC in 2nd CH from hook and SC across (32 st)
R2-3: CH 1, turn. SC across (32 st)
R4: CH 1, turn. SC2TOG, 12 SC, 2 SC2TOG, 12 SC, SC2TOG (28 st)
R5: CH 1, turn. SC2TOG, 24 SC, SC2TOG (26 st)
R6: CH 1, turn. 3 SC, 5 SL ST, 10 SC, 5 SL ST, 3 SC (26 st)
R7: CH 1, turn. 3 SC, CH 5, skip 5 ST, 3 SC, 2 SC2TOG, 3 SC, CH 5, skip 5 ST, 3 SC (14 st, 10 chains)
R8: CH 1, turn. INC SC, SC, INC SC, 5 SC around chain, INC SC, 3 SC, SC INC, 2 SC, INC SC, 5 SC around chain, INC SC, SC, INC SC (31 st)
Finish coat by SC all the way around the outer edge of the coat, putting 2-3 SC in each corner. SL ST to first SC and FO, weaving in end. Place coat aside.
Tail:
In green colour:
R1: 4 SC in MR (4 st)
R2: INC SC x4 (8 st)
R3: (3 SC, INC SC) x2 (10 st)
R4: SC around (10 st)
FO, leaving long tail for sewing. Place coat on bunny body in a position that you like. Position the tail so it sits slightly underneath the coat without making it so the coat can’t close while helping the bunny sit upright. Stuff the tail and pin in place, Take the coat off the bunny. Sew the tail in place, weaving in the ends.
Alternatively, you may choose to sew the tail on top of the coat.
Arms: (make 2)
In green colour yarn:
R1: 5 SC in MR (5 st)
R2: INC SC (10 st)
R3-R4: SC around (10 st)
R5: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)
Stuff tip of hand lightly
R6- R9: SC around (8 st)
To close, pinch sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. Finish off, leaving length of yarn.
Put the coat back on in a position you like and so the coat can close, noting where the holes for the arm sit, which should be below each of the bolts on the face (placing a pin in each corner of the hole is a good way to mark where they should sit). Remove the coat and after pinning the arms in place, sew on to the body. Weave in the ends.
Attaching the Coat:
Slip the arms of your bunny through each arm hole. Using the tail left over from your starting chain to sew the front of the coat together, with one side overlapping the other slightly. Weave in ends.
Accents:
Include some, none or all of the suggested accents to complete the look of your bunny!
- Sew down corners of collar to the front of the jacket
- Sew button(s) onto front of the coat
- Using small amount of green thread, stitch an ear to remain bent.
