Here Comes the Bunny

Here Comes the Bunny

After meeting this spring after leaving their burrows, this little bunny duo is ready to tie the knot. Keep an eye on the bouquet though, or they might eat it! These bunnies would make a perfect wedding gift or décor (or just to make because they’re such cuties!). Add accessories and accents to your bunny with beads, pearls, buttons or embroidered flowers to make them your very own!

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

Stitches and Abbreviations

Materials

  • Hook: 3.5 mm, **3.25 for yarn under- see Other Notes**
  • Yarn: Worsted Weight: Approx 100g- Fur Colour, Black, White, accent colour for flower and bowtie, pink/brown for nose (I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads)
  • 10 mm Safety Eyes or Embroidered Eyes
  • Needle
  • Polyfill
  • Accessories: Buttons, beads or pearls and thread to close dress, embroidery thread if you wish to add stitched details to the dress
  • Optional: Stitch Markers and pins

Other Notes: Please read before starting your bunnies!

Magic Ring alternative- if you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain

Continuous Rounds– each row is completed in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated

Colour Change– When changing from one colour to another, in your final SC stitch after you have 2 loops on your hook, pull through with your new colour. In the next stitch of the next row, a SL ST is worked as it creates a more seamless colour change that is not as obvious

colour change

Bunny Differences- the stitch counts for both bunnies is the same, but there are small variances between the two as one wears a dress and the other a tuxedo. The base pattern instructions will always be listed first, followed by any alterations (if any) for the tuxedo bunny

Yarn Over vs. Yarn Under: Depending on whether your work your SC stitches using a traditional yarn over or yarn under (or the combination yarn over/under), your bunny may be a different size. For bunnies completed using yarn under or a combination, you will need to use a smaller hook (3.25 mm) for the dress pattern to compensate for the body being slightly smaller. If you completed your bunny using yarn over, use the same size hook for the dress.

Dress: Depending on the type of yarn your use, you may find that the dress drapes differently. Stiffer yarns such as Impeccable by Loops and Threads will make your dress hold a round bell or flower shape, as shown in the images in this pattern. Softer yarns like Caron Simply Soft will make your dress more ‘flowy’. Check out my Instagram to see the shape of different dresses made by my testers!

Dress:

For this dress, you will utilize 2 buttons/beads/pearls to hold the dress closed with a loop made of chains. Depending on how large these accessories are, the number of additional chains will vary. This dress should fit with a bit of overlap (if the body has been stuffed adequately), and has a bell shape around the body. Complete the dress using yarn over stitches, regardless of how you stitched the body. I have included a diagram of one shell of the dress from Row 5- Row 8. You should have 6 shells when your dress is complete.

In white yarn:

R1: CH 36. Mark final chain as this is the start of your dress. CH enough additional stitches to tightly fit around your button/bead/pearl, SL ST to first additional stitch (I chained 5 st to fit around a small pearl). SC in the CH that you marked and next 4 st, CH 6, skip 8 st, 10 SC, CH 6, skip 8 st, SC 5 (32 st + # of st used for loop)

R2: CH 1, turn. INC SC, 4 SC, 6 SC around chain, INC SC, 8 SC, INC SC, 6 SC around CH, 4 SC, INC SC (36 st)

R3-R4: CH 1, turn. SC across (36 st)

At the end of R4 you will make a second loop, with the same # of chains as the first (unless you are using a smaller/larger button/bead/pearl), SL ST to first CH.

R5: In FLO, SC across (36 st) This line will be the front of the dress to mark the separation between the top and skirt of the dress

R6: CH 1, turn. (SC, skip st, {HDC, DC INC}, {DC INC, HDC}, skip st, SC) x6 (48 st)

R7: CH 1, turn. (SC, 2 HDC, 2 INC 3 HDC, 2 HDC, SC) x6 (72 st)

R8: CH 1, turn. In BLO, SC across (72 st across)

FO and weave in ends. Sew buttons/beads/pearls to line up on opposite side of the dress to where the loops are.

Pearl attachments

This marks the end of the body of the dress. You can opt to leave the dress straps as they are, or continue on to add ruffles into the CH 8 straps.

Ruffles: (Make 2)

Working into the chain, SL ST, SC, INC SC, 2 INC HDC, INC SC, SC, SL ST across (12 st)

You can leave the dress as it is, or add additional accessories. Options might include sewing pearls or small beads along the waistband, adding small bows, flowers or tulle, stitching across the front loops at the waist with a SL ST or crab stitch, adding embroidery thread accents etc.! Check out the dresses made by testers on Instagram for more ideas!

Dresses

Flower:

R1: CH 13, skip first 2 chains from hook (counts as first HDC), {2 DC, HDC}, (SL ST, {HDC, 2 DC, HDC}) x5 (19 st)

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing

If you wish to make a larger flower, add 2 CH for each additional petal and repeat everything within the ( )

Using the natural curl that will form, continue to curl flower petals so they form a flower. Several petals will lay on top of each other. Sew through the layers of chain to form the flower. Pin the flower to one of the ears of the bunny and sew. I ran my needle back and forth through the back of the flower and front of the base of the ear a few times. Weave in ends.

Flower

Bowtie:

R1: CH 15, SC in 2nd CH from how and SC across (14 st)

R2-R3: CH 1, turn. SC across (14 st)

If you prefer a thicker bowtie, add another row of SC

FO, leaving a long tail of yarn and sew two ends together. Pinch together bow in the centre and wrap the yarn tightly around several times. Run the needle through the back and around the wrapped yarn a few times to hold it in place. Pin to front of bunny at top of his tummy and sew on. Weave in ends.
